Programs

Characterized by its preventative nature and intervening in children’s lives before they get in trouble in school or with the law, BHGH makes a long-term commitment to fundamentally change a child’s environment from one that is troubled and potentially destructive to one filled with opportunity and hope by providing our scholars with

  • Quality education and one-on-one mentoring through college
  • A safe, nurturing environment with highly trained staff
  • Medical and psychological care as needed
  • Individualized personal development aimed at improving their self-esteem
through the exploration and development of their innate academic, athletic,
      cultural and leadership talents
  • Guidance through the college application and financial assistance processes
  • High expectations for academic and personal excellence
  • Financial assistance in college

Rather than touching the lives of many children peripherally, BHGH focuses its resources intensively on changing the lives of a few, instilling them with a sense of responsibility to, in turn; use their education to improve the conditions of their families and their communities. As a result, 100% of Arizona graduates have been admitted to college, and 97% of these students are the first members of their families to attend college.

Residential Program Boys Hope and Girls Hope

The BHGH Residential Program provides an opportunity for students to leave family, neighborhood and school environments that obstruct rather than facilitate their ability to safely realize their personal and academic potential and become responsible adults. Residential scholars live in either the Boys Hope or Girls Hope homes and attend local private schools. The homes provide a family-like, value-centered environment with live-in “house parents” who mentor, support and love the scholars as their own. In this stable and nurturing environment, scholars not only are able to get their physical, social and emotional needs met but also can begin to explore and develop their talents.

Recognizing the significant needs that these children possess, BHGH meets each scholar on an individual basis and provides whatever services are necessary in order to help that child succeed, including but not limited to full room and board, tuition for their schooling and associated expenses, tutoring and mentoring, psychological counseling, medical and dental care, personal growth and enrichment opportunities, college counseling and assistance with college tuition and expenses.

Community Based Program

Seeking to impact more children than can be served in a residential setting, BHGH adopted the Community-Based program in 2003 to expand our outreach to additional children-in-need in the community. The program enrolls economically disadvantaged children into an intensive eleven-year program of academic preparation and character building, beginning in 6th grade, through high school and ending at college graduation.

A major objective of the program is to give low-income, at-risk students with academic capability access to private schools characterized by their disciplined campuses and rigorous academic curricula where academic success is an expectation and nearly 100% of their students graduate and enter college. Students currently attend St. Francis Elementary School, St. Gregory's Elementary School, Madison Traditional Academy, Brophy College Prep, Bourgade Catholic High School, North High School, St. Mary's Catholic High School or Xavier College Prep.

College Support Program Scholars and Graduates

The ultimate goal for BHGH scholars is college graduation. To this end, BHGH assists scholars through the college application, financial aid and college selection process. In addition, scholars are provided with additional funds to offset college costs not covered by financial aid and scholarships and continue to receive emotional support throughout their college years. BHGH often becomes a second family and resource for our graduates, helping to support them with their adjustment to college and fostering their success as independent college students.
